At this Norfolk auto center, buy a car and change a life — really

1+ week, 6+ day ago (578+ words) For 70 years, Eggleston, a nonprofit organization headquartered in Norfolk, has been providing vocational training and employment opportunities for disabled Tidewater citizens. Eggleston, named for local philanthropist Louise W. Eggleston, was initially established as the Tidewater Vocational Center in 1955 and later renamed to honor Eggleston for her generosity in bequeathing a building to house the organization's operations. "We've come a long way," said Paul Atkinson Jr., vice president of business operations for Eggleston. "We've grown exponentially." While Eggleston manages a number of business entities, ranging from document conversion and shredding to laundry services, the company's automotive center is probably the most unique of all its business models. Eggleston's auto donation platform has prospered for more than 25 years. It has proven to be a significant fundraiser for the organization. Proceeds from the auto center's auctions subsidize programs for individuals with disabilities which might…...

Column: Why is everyone so angry? Consider the news

5+ day, 16+ hour ago (365+ words) I learned a few weeks ago that the superintendent of schools in Fairfax County must have a security detail with her. Recently, five school board members in Henrico County each had a security guard assigned to protect them as they conducted a town hall meeting. Really? As a proud member of the "Baby Boomer" generation, I believe one major factor contributing to the escalation of anger in America is the way people get their news. In the early 1950s when televisions first began to appear in homes, there were locally only two channels, CBS and NBC. Local and national news and weather only occupied an hour a day from 6-7 p.m. Newscasters gave us the straight facts with no opinion expressed; the audience had no idea the newscasters" personal political leanings. CNN, founded by Ted Turner, introduced in 1980 the first "24/7 newscycle" cable television…...

Bob Molinaro: ODU men’s basketball team hopes to find form vs. state foes

2+ day, 23+ hour ago (625+ words) Starting Sunday afternoon, Mike Jones" Old Dominion basketball team " 0-5 away from home " hopes to get off the schneid with back-to-back-to-back games at William and Mary, Richmond and George Mason. Followed by a home date against James Madison. It"s an opportunity for the Monarchs to pick up a few in-state bragging points before Sun Belt play begins. Saturday night live: Virginia is a better team than Virginia Tech and is playing at home. But for a series in which Tech has won 23 of the last 25, odds favoring the Cavaliers by 9 " or more points seem a bit generous. Future watch: Virginia is striving to reach the ACC championship game while these appendages to the regular season still exist. With a 12-team " soon to be 16 " national playoff, conference title games are falling out of favor in the power leagues. In passing: The…...

Top BBC bosses resign after criticism of the broadcaster’s editing of a Trump speech

2+ week, 6+ day ago (615+ words) The BBC said Director-General Tim Davie and news CEO Deborah Turness had both decided to leave the corporation. Britain's publicly funded national broadcaster has been criticized for editing a speech Trump made on Jan. 6, 2021, before protesters attacked the Capitol in Washington. Critics said that the way the speech was edited for a BBC documentary last year was misleading and cut out a section where Trump said that he wanted supporters to demonstrate peacefully. In a letter to staff, Davie said quitting the job after five years "is entirely my decision." "Overall the BBC is delivering well, but there have been some mistakes made and as director-general I have to take ultimate responsibility," Davie said. He said that he was "working through exact timings with the Board to allow for an orderly transition to a successor over the coming months." Turness…...

Colonial Williamsburg looks to retain centuries-old documents

4+ week, 1+ day ago (551+ words) WILLIAMSBURG " The Colonial Williamsburg Foundation has filed a legal notice in The Virginian Pilot seeking to claim property placed in its care nearly 40 years ago. According to the notice, which appeared in the Norfolk-based newspaper on Oct. 18 and 25, a copy of The Virginia Gazette from July 8, 1763, and the 1763 cipher book of a Solomon Higgins have been in the foundation's possession since July 11, 1986. The Gazette is now owned by the company that owns the Pilot and Daily Press. The material is in Colonial Williamsburg's John D. Rockefeller Jr. Library, but it's not clear exactly what historical value they hold. "The library has a record for the objects that states they were lent for microfilming in 1986, but there is no additional information beyond what is included in the legal notice," according to Rockefeller associate librarian Douglas Mayo, who registered the legal notice to…...
